-
Yes. Electrolysis is the only hair removal method recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as permanent hair removal. During treatment, a tiny probe (similar to the size of a hair) is inserted into the natural opening of the hair follicle, where a controlled current destroys the cells responsible for hair growth. Because hair grows in cycles, multiple treatments are needed to target every follicle during its active growth stage.
-
Electrolysis is recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a method of permanent hair removal, distinguishing it from laser hair removal, which is FDA-cleared for permanent hair reduction. This distinction reflects how each treatment works. Electrolysis treats each individual follicle and is effective on all hair colors and skin tones, while laser relies on pigment in the hair and may not permanently eliminate every hair.
-
While both treatments reduce unwanted hair, they work in very different ways. Laser hair removal uses light energy that targets pigment (melanin) within the hair, making it most effective on dark hair with lighter skin tones. Electrolysis treats each hair follicle individually with a precise electrical current, making it effective on all skin tones and every hair color—including blonde, gray, white, and red hair. Electrolysis is also the only method recognized by the FDA as permanent hair removal.
-
Yes. Unlike laser hair removal, electrolysis does not rely on pigment to destroy the hair follicle. Instead, it targets the follicle directly, making it equally effective on blonde, gray, white, red, and dark hair. If you've been told your hair is "too light" for laser, electrolysis is your proven permanent solution.
-
Absolutely. Because electrolysis does not use light or target skin pigment, it is safe and effective for every skin tone. Whether your complexion is very fair or richly pigmented, electrolysis offers consistent permanent results without the limitations associated with laser hair removal. Treatment is personalized to your skin, hair, and goals to ensure both safety and effectiveness.
-
Coarse or deeply rooted hairs may require multiple treatments to fully address the follicle. Finer hair will take fewer sessions to permanently destroy because they have a smaller root structure. With consistent treatment, the goal is to progressively reduce the follicle’s ability to produce hair until the targeted follicle is permanently disabled. We work with your skin to ensure effective treatments without over-treating the skin. Over time, you will need fewer and fewer sessions until you achieve full clearance.
You may notice new hairs appearing throughout your treatment journey. These are typically hairs that were previously dormant or in a different stage of the hair growth cycle—not hairs that have "grown back.” Hormonal changes, certain medications, or medical conditions such as PCOS/PMOS may also stimulate the development of new follicles over time, which can require occasional maintenance treatments.
Treatment Questions
-
The number of treatments varies from person to person and depends on factors such as the treatment area, hair density, previous hair removal methods, hormones, and consistency of appointments. Because hair grows in cycles, not every follicle can be treated during a single visit. Most clients see gradual improvement with each appointment, and a personalized treatment plan will be discussed during your consultation.
The standard industry timeline ranges anywhere from 12-18 months for full clearance. Every client has a different timeline and your electrologist will work with you to ensure maximum effectiveness without over treating the skin.
-
Hair grows in three different stages, and electrolysis is most effective when a hair is in its active growth phase (anagen). Since only a percentage of your hairs are actively growing at any given time, multiple treatments are necessary to permanently treat every follicle as it becomes available. Staying consistent with appointments helps achieve the best results in the shortest amount of time.
-
Your recommended treatment schedule depends on the area being treated and your individual hair growth. In the beginning, appointments are often scheduled every one to two weeks to keep new growth under control. As hair becomes finer and less frequent, visits are spaced farther apart until treatment is complete. We'll recommend a schedule tailored specifically to your goals.
-
Appointment lengths vary depending on the treatment area and the amount of hair being treated. Sessions may range from 15-minute maintenance appointments to 30-, 45-, or 60-minute treatments for larger areas. During your consultation, we'll recommend an appointment length that fits your needs and treatment goals.
-
Yes. Shaving is the recommended method of hair removal between appointments because it does not disturb the hair follicle. Leaving the follicle intact allows us to permanently treat each hair during your next visit. We simply ask that you leave enough visible hair growth before your appointment so the hairs can be easily identified and treated.
-
No. Waxing, tweezing, threading, and epilating distort the root structure of the hair, causing it to grow back thicker and stronger. To achieve the fastest and most effective permanent results, avoid these methods once you begin electrolysis. If needed, shaving or trimming is perfectly acceptable between appointments.
-
Occasionally rescheduling an appointment is not a problem, but frequent gaps between treatments can extend the overall time needed to complete your treatment plan. Hair continues to cycle through different growth stages whether you're being treated or not. Staying on your recommended schedule allows us to treat new active hairs as they appear, helping you reach permanent clearance more efficiently.
Pain & Comfort
-
Everyone experiences electrolysis differently, but most clients describe the sensation as a brief warmth, tingling, or quick pinch that lasts only a fraction of a second. The level of discomfort depends on the treatment area, your personal pain tolerance, your menstrual cycle, stress levels, hydration, and the method of electrolysis being used. Most clients find treatments very manageable, especially as they become familiar with the process.
Please visit our Pain Management page for tips and tricks to make your treatments more comfortable.
-
Staying well hydrated, eating a balanced meal beforehand, and getting a good night's sleep can help make your treatment more comfortable. Many clients also find it helpful to avoid excessive caffeine immediately before their appointment, as it can increase sensitivity. Feel free to bring headphones, listen to music or a podcast, or simply relax during your session. If you're concerned about discomfort, we're happy to discuss additional ways to help you feel at ease.
Please visit our Pain Management page for tips and tricks to make your treatments more comfortable.
-
Yes. Many clients choose to use an over-the-counter or prescription topical numbing cream for sensitive areas such as the upper lip, chin, or bikini line. If you plan to use a numbing cream, follow the manufacturer's instructions or your healthcare provider's recommendations for proper application. Numbing cream should be applied at least 30-60 minutes before your scheduled appointment and applied in a thick layer to completely cover the skin. We also recommend wrapping the area in plastic wrap to stop the cream from drying out.
Safety
-
Yes. Electrolysis has been safely performed for more than 100 years and is considered a safe, effective method of permanent hair removal when performed by a trained, licensed electrologist. We use sterile, single-use probes and follow strict infection control and sanitation protocols to provide a clean, professional treatment environment. Your safety and comfort are always our highest priorities.
-
When performed correctly and when proper aftercare instructions are followed, permanent scarring is extremely uncommon. Temporary redness, slight swelling, or small pinpoint scabs are a normal part of the healing process and typically resolve on their own within several days. Picking at the skin or failing to follow aftercare recommendations may increase the risk of irritation or delayed healing.
-
Temporary changes in skin pigmentation can occasionally occur, particularly in individuals with darker skin tones or skin that is prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. These changes are typically temporary and fade as the skin heals. Following aftercare instructions, protecting the treated area from sun exposure, and avoiding picking or scratching can help minimize the risk. If you are prone to hyperpigmentation, ask your electrologist what products are recommended to add to your skincare routine during your treatment journey.
-
There is very little downtime after electrolysis. Most clients return to work, school, or their normal daily activities immediately following treatment. You may notice mild redness, slight swelling, or tenderness for several hours, which is a normal response and usually resolves quickly.
-
If the treated area is on the face, it's generally recommended to avoid applying makeup for at least 24 hours whenever possible. Freshly treated follicles are temporarily open, and allowing the skin time to recover helps reduce the risk of irritation or bacteria entering the follicles. If makeup is necessary, use clean/disinfected brushes or applicators and choose gentle, non-comedogenic products.
-
Light daily activities are perfectly fine after your appointment, but it's best to avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sweating, hot yoga, saunas, steam rooms, or hot tubs for the first 24 to 48 hours. Heat and perspiration may increase skin irritation or prolong redness. Allowing the skin a short recovery period promotes optimal healing.
-
It's best to minimize direct sun exposure for at least 24 to 48 hours after treatment, especially on areas that have recently been treated. Freshly treated skin can be more sensitive to UV rays, increasing the chance of irritation or temporary pigmentation changes. If you will be outdoors, wear protective clothing or apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen after the skin has fully calmed.
We always recommend daily SPF to protect your skin, even after treatment has healed. Consistent sun protection supports healthy skin and helps minimize the risk of post-treatment discoloration.
Hair & Hormones
-
Facial hair growth is incredibly common and can occur for many reasons. Genetics, hormonal changes, aging, menopause, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), certain medications, or other medical conditions can all contribute to unwanted hair growth. While the cause may vary, electrolysis can permanently remove the hairs that are currently present, helping you feel more confident in your skin.
-
Electrolysis permanently destroys the individual follicles that are treated, but it cannot stop your body from creating new follicles if hormonal changes continue to stimulate hair growth. Conditions such as PCOS/PMOS and menopause may cause new hairs to develop over time. With consistent treatment, electrolysis can permanently eliminate existing hairs, and occasional maintenance appointments may be recommended if new growth appears in the future.
We recommend treating hair as it becomes visible to help keep your treatment journey as efficient as possible. Finer hairs generally require less time to treat than coarse hairs, and addressing unwanted growth early can help prevent the need to manage larger amounts of visible hair later on.
-
Yes. Electrolysis is one of the most effective treatment options for unwanted hair caused by PCOS/PMOS. While it cannot treat the underlying hormonal condition, it can permanently remove the individual hairs that develop as a result of it. Many clients with PCOS/PMOS achieve excellent long-term results by combining consistent electrolysis treatments with medical management of their hormone levels when appropriate.
-
Yes. Hormonal changes during menopause often cause a decrease in estrogen and a relative increase in androgen activity, which can lead to coarse hairs developing on the chin, upper lip, jawline, or neck. Electrolysis offers a permanent solution for these unwanted hairs and is an excellent option for women experiencing age-related hormonal changes.
-
Hormonal changes during pregnancy can increase hair growth or cause existing hairs to appear darker or thicker. For the safety and well-being of our clients, ÉPURÉ does not perform electrolysis treatments during pregnancy.
After pregnancy, hormone-related hair growth may naturally decrease as hormone levels return to their normal range. Any remaining unwanted hair can be addressed with electrolysis once you have completed your pregnancy and have been medically cleared for treatment.
-
Stress itself does not create new hair follicles, but it can contribute to hormonal fluctuations that may influence hair growth in some individuals. If you're noticing sudden or excessive hair growth, it's always a good idea to discuss your symptoms with your healthcare provider. Electrolysis can permanently remove the unwanted hairs regardless of what initially triggered their growth.
SRS Pre-Surgical Electrolysis
-
Some gender-affirming surgeries require hair to be removed from specific areas of tissue that will be used during surgery. Electrolysis permanently treats individual hair follicles and may be used to clear hair from the surgical site before your procedure.
Your surgeon determines whether hair removal is required and which areas need to be treated. Always follow the specific instructions provided by your surgical team.
-
The required treatment area varies depending on your surgical technique and surgeon. Your surgical team should provide you with specific instructions or a diagram showing the area that needs to be cleared.
We recommend bringing your surgeon's hair-removal instructions or treatment map to your consultation so we can create a treatment plan around their requirements.
-
Start as early as possible. Surgical hair clearance can require many months of treatment because hairs grow in different cycles and cannot all be permanently treated at once.
Your surgeon may have a specific deadline for completing hair removal before surgery. Because timelines vary, we recommend starting the conversation with your surgical team and electrologist as soon as you know surgery is being considered.
-
There isn't a standard number of sessions. The amount of time needed depends on the size of the treatment area, hair density, hair characteristics, previous hair removal, and your individual growth cycles.
During your consultation, we can evaluate the area and help you develop a treatment schedule based on your surgical timeline.
-
This depends on your surgical team's requirements and your individual hair characteristics.
Some surgical programs may accept laser hair removal for certain areas, while others may specifically require electrolysis or recommend it for hairs that remain after laser. Always confirm the accepted method with your surgeon before beginning treatment.
-
Yes. Shaving is the only hair-removal method we recommend between SRS electrolysis appointments.
Shaving cuts the hair at the surface without removing it from the follicle, allowing your electrologist to treat the hair during your next appointment.
Please avoid tweezing, waxing, threading, epilating, or any other method that removes the hair from the root, as this can interfere with your treatment and make it more difficult to accurately target the follicle.
-
Genital and pre-surgical areas can be more sensitive than other areas of the body. Comfort varies significantly from person to person.
We can discuss comfort-management options during your consultation and with your doctor.
If you plan to use a topical anesthetic or another pain-relief method, discuss it with your healthcare provider and follow your electrologist's instructions for use.
-
This is an important question to discuss with your surgical team.
Your surgeon may recommend completing electrolysis a certain amount of time before surgery to allow the skin to fully settle. Because requirements differ between surgeons and procedures, we recommend following your surgical team's specific timeline.
-
If your surgical program requires documentation, ask us about our treatment records and documentation options during your consultation.
We can discuss what information we are able to provide and how you should submit it to your surgical team.
-
Only your surgical team can determine what constitutes adequate hair clearance for your procedure. Different surgical techniques and surgeons have different requirements. Our role is to work toward the treatment area specified by your surgical team and help you stay on track with your hair-clearance timeline.
-
It may be. Some insurance plans cover medically necessary electrolysis as part of preparation for gender-affirming surgery, while others may have specific requirements or exclusions.
Coverage can depend on your insurance plan, the type of surgery you're preparing for, medical-necessity documentation, prior authorization, and your insurer's provider requirements.
We recommend contacting your insurance company before beginning treatment to confirm your benefits and requirements. Your surgical team may also be able to provide documentation supporting the medical necessity of pre-surgical hair removal.

Laser vs Electrolysis
-
Laser hair removal works by targeting pigment (melanin) inside the hair. It is generally most effective on dark, coarse hair and may not permanently remove finer hairs or hair that lacks sufficient pigment. Over time, some hairs may become finer or lighter after laser, while others may continue to grow. Electrolysis is commonly used to permanently remove the remaining hairs that laser could not eliminate.
-
Absolutely. Many clients seek electrolysis after completing laser hair removal to permanently eliminate the remaining hairs. Electrolysis is especially effective for treating stubborn regrowth, lighter-colored hairs, scattered patches, or areas where laser produced only partial results. It's often considered the ideal finishing treatment after laser.
-
The right hair removal method depends on your individual goals, hair color, skin tone, treatment area, and desired results. Laser hair removal can be an effective option for reducing unwanted hair, particularly when treating larger areas with darker, more pigmented hair.
Electrolysis offers a different approach, providing permanent hair removal and working on all hair colors and skin tones. For those looking to permanently eliminate unwanted hair—whether as a standalone treatment or to address the remaining hairs after laser—electrolysis offers a precise, personalized solution designed for long-term results.
At ÉPURÉ, we take the time to understand your goals and help you determine which approach is right for you.
-
Yes. Many clients benefit from using both treatments. Laser can reduce dense, dark hair over larger areas, while electrolysis permanently removes the lighter, finer, or remaining hairs that laser cannot effectively treat. Combining both methods can be an excellent strategy for achieving complete hair removal, depending on your individual needs and goals.
Cost
-
The cost of electrolysis depends on the length of your appointment rather than the body area being treated. Since every client's hair density, hair type, and treatment goals are unique, charging by time ensures you only pay for the treatment you receive. During your consultation, we'll recommend an appointment schedule and provide an estimate based on your individual needs.
For our exact pricing by treatment time, please visit our Pricing page to view our services and access our online scheduling link.
-
Unlike laser hair removal, electrolysis treats each individual hair follicle. Two clients may have the same treatment area but require very different amounts of time depending on hair density, hair thickness, previous hair removal methods, and hormonal factors. Time-based pricing allows treatment to be customized fairly and accurately for every client.
-
Your total investment depends on several factors, including the size of the treatment area, hair density, consistency of appointments, previous hair removal methods, and whether hormonal conditions are contributing to new hair growth. During your consultation, we'll evaluate your concerns and create a personalized treatment plan so you know what to expect.
-
Yes. A consultation is required for all new clients so we can discuss your treatment goals, assess your hair and skin, and create a personalized treatment approach. Your consultation can also include a discounted 30-minute treatment, allowing us to determine the appropriate settings for your hair while providing an opportunity to observe how your skin responds to treatment.
Before Appointment
-
Yes. Shaving is perfectly fine before your electrolysis appointment and is often preferred. We need enough visible hair above the skin to properly grasp and treat it, so shaving approximately 3 days before your appointment can provide a good balance.
-
Your hair only needs to be long enough to grasp with tweezers, typically around 1/8 inch (3 mm) or slightly longer. There is no need to grow the hair out for weeks before your appointment.
-
We recommend limiting caffeine before your appointment. Caffeine can make some people feel more sensitive, restless, or tense, which may make the treatment feel less comfortable.
If you regularly drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages, you don't necessarily need to skip them completely. However, reducing your intake or choosing to avoid caffeine for a few hours before your appointment may help you feel more relaxed and comfortable during treatment.
-
We recommend arriving with clean, dry skin and avoiding moisturizer immediately before your appointment. Oils, lotions, and other skincare products can make it more difficult to work efficiently on the treatment area and possibly cause surface reaction.
You can continue your normal skincare routine in the days leading up to your appointment. On the day of treatment, simply cleanse the area gently and leave it free of lotions, oils, makeup, or other products.
After Appointment
-
After electrolysis, your skin may be temporarily sensitive or appear slightly red. To support proper healing, we recommend avoiding activities and products that may irritate the treated area.
For the first 24–48 hours, avoid:
Touching or picking at the treated area
Makeup or heavy skincare products on freshly treated skin
Exfoliants, retinoids, acids, or other active skincare ingredients
Heavy sweating or strenuous exercise
Hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms
Swimming
Direct sun exposure and tanning
Keep the area clean, avoid unnecessary irritation, and follow your personalized aftercare instructions. Daily SPF is recommended once the skin has healed and whenever the treated area is exposed to the sun.
-
Redness after electrolysis is a normal response and is a sign that the skin has been treated. Most clients notice temporary redness that fades within a few hours, although some areas or more sensitive skin types may remain slightly pink for 24–48 hours.
The length of time redness lasts can vary depending on the treatment area, the density and type of hair being treated, your skin’s sensitivity, and how your skin responds. Following proper aftercare can help support a smooth recovery.
-
We recommend waiting before exfoliating after your electrolysis appointment to allow the skin time to recover. Avoid scrubs, exfoliating acids, and other exfoliating products on the treated area for at least 48 hours or until any redness or sensitivity has subsided.
Once your skin has fully calmed, gentle exfoliation may be resumed as part of your normal skincare routine. Avoid aggressive exfoliation, as it can irritate the skin and interfere with the healing process.
-
You may shave after your electrolysis treatment once the skin has returned to normal and any redness or sensitivity has subsided. For most clients, this is typically within 24–48 hours after treatment.
Avoid shaving immediately after your appointment, as freshly treated skin may be more sensitive and can become irritated. When you resume shaving, use a clean razor and avoid applying excessive pressure to the treated area.
Eligibility
-
Electrolysis is an excellent option for anyone looking for permanent hair removal, regardless of skin tone or hair color. Whether you're bothered by a few stray hairs or larger areas of unwanted growth, treatment can be customized to meet your goals. It's especially beneficial for individuals with blonde, gray, white, or red hair, those experiencing hormonal hair growth, or anyone seeking a permanent solution after shaving, waxing, or laser hair removal.
-
Absolutely. Electrolysis is suitable for everyone. Many men choose treatment to permanently remove or shape facial hair, clean up the neckline, reduce back or shoulder hair, remove ear or nose hair, or eliminate ingrown hairs. Treatment plans are personalized based on your goals, whether you're looking for complete removal or simply refining certain areas.
-
Yes. Teenagers may be good candidates for electrolysis if unwanted hair is affecting their confidence or quality of life. Because hormones are still developing during adolescence, treatment plans may vary, and ongoing hormonal changes can lead to new hair growth over time. For clients under 18, parental or guardian consent is required.
-
There is no specific age requirement for electrolysis, but treatment recommendations are based on each individual's needs, maturity, and hair growth pattern. If you're considering treatment for a younger client, we're happy to discuss whether now is the appropriate time to begin and what results can realistically be expected.
-
For your safety and peace of mind, we do not perform electrolysis treatments during pregnancy. Although there is limited research regarding electrolysis during pregnancy, we choose to postpone treatment until after delivery. Once you've recovered and have been medically cleared, we'll be happy to resume or begin your treatment plan.

-
Yes. Electrolysis can often be safely performed over tattooed skin because the treatment targets the hair follicle rather than the pigment in the skin. However, treatment settings and techniques may be adjusted depending on the area being treated and the condition of the skin. We'll evaluate your tattoo during your consultation to ensure treatment can be performed safely.
Results
-
Many clients notice a gradual reduction in hair growth after just a few appointments. As treated hairs stop returning and fewer new hairs emerge during each growth cycle, the treatment area becomes progressively clearer. Permanent hair removal is a gradual process, and staying consistent with your recommended appointment schedule produces the best results.
-
In most cases, the hair you're seeing isn't actually growing back. Hair grows in natural cycles, and many follicles are dormant beneath the skin during your earlier treatments. As these dormant hairs enter their active growth phase, they become visible and can then be permanently treated. This is why multiple appointments are necessary and why consistency is so important.
-
New hair growth can occur naturally over time due to hormones, genetics, aging, pregnancy, menopause, or certain medications. These are not hairs that have "regrown" from previously treated follicles but rather newly activated follicles that were not producing visible hair before. Electrolysis can permanently remove these new hairs as they appear.

Things to Know Prior to Your Appointment:
-
Hydration is Mandatory
Drink Water: Drink plenty of water the day before and the day of your treatment. Well-hydrated follicles conduct electrical currents more efficiently and allows your skin to heal faster.
-
Hair Length Requirements
Stop waxing, plucking, or threading immediately as this prolongs treatment and distorts hair follicles.
Shaving is allowed during the entirety of your electrolysis journey, but please allow three days of growth prior to your scheduled appointment.
-
Skin and Product Restrictions
Clean Skin Only: Arrive with clean skin. The treatment area must be completely free of makeup, lotions, oils, deodorants, and perfumes.
Avoid Sun Exposure: Excessive sun exposure not only dries the skin out, but can cause skin irritation when combined with your electrolysis treatment. Sunburned skin can not be treated.
-
Pain Management
Topical Anesthetics: If you plan to use an over-the-counter topical numbing cream (such as 5% Lidocaine), apply it thick like frosting to the treatment area one hour before your session. Wrap the area tightly in plastic cling wrap to keep cream from drying out. Your electrologist will remove the numbing cream throughout the treatment to ensure maximum effectiveness.
Many clients find that taking an oral pain reliever about thirty minutes prior to their appointment helps sensation during the appointment and minimizes swelling afterwards.
-
Stimulants and Menstrual Cycle
Limit Caffeine and Alcohol: Avoid caffeine (coffee, energy drinks, chocolate) and alcohol prior to your appointment. Stimulants increase skin sensitivity
Navigate Alongside Your Menstrual Cycle: Some clients experience more sensitivity prior to their cycle due to hormone fluctuations that naturally make your nerve endings more reactive.
-
Avoid Skin Irritants
Avoid Seven Days Before Treatment: Retinoids, strong exfoliants, chemical peels
Medications such as Accutane/Isotretinoin must be stopped at least (six) months before treatment to prevent severe skin damage.
Schedule a Consultation
Every treatment journey begins with an in-office consultation.
We will evaluate your hair type, medical history, and goals to determine whether electrolysis is the right choice for you.
